This is one of the most common questions new POD sellers ask: should I sell on Etsy or Shopify? The answer is not either-or for most successful sellers. Each platform serves a different purpose, and understanding those differences helps you make the right choice for your current stage.

Etsy: The Marketplace

Etsy is a marketplace with millions of active buyers already searching for products. When you list on Etsy, you are opening a booth in a crowded, bustling market. The foot traffic is built in. You do not need to drive your own visitors, buyers come to Etsy to shop and discover your products through search.

The tradeoff: you are competing with thousands of other sellers for visibility. Etsy controls the search algorithm, sets the fees, and makes policy decisions that affect your business. You are building on their platform, under their rules.

Shopify: Your Own Store

Shopify is a platform for building your own standalone online store. You control everything, the design, the branding, the customer experience, the pricing, the data. Your store is yours. No algorithm changes will suddenly tank your visibility.

The tradeoff: there is no built-in traffic. Every visitor to your Shopify store must be driven there through your own marketing, social media, paid ads, Pinterest, email, SEO. This requires time, skill, and often money.

Cost Comparison

  • Etsy: No monthly fee (standard plan), $0.20 per listing, 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing. Total per sale: roughly 10-13% of the sale price.
  • Shopify: $39/month (Basic plan), no per-listing fee, no transaction fee if using Shopify Payments, 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing. Total per sale: roughly 3-4% of the sale price plus the monthly fee.

For low-volume sellers, Etsy is cheaper because there is no monthly fee. As volume grows, Shopify becomes more cost-effective because the per-sale percentage is much lower.

When to Start with Etsy

If you are new to selling, start with Etsy. The built-in traffic lets you validate your products without needing marketing expertise. You can learn what sells, refine your product line, and build confidence before investing in your own store.

When to Add Shopify

Once your Etsy shop is generating consistent revenue and you have built an audience (email list, social media following, Pinterest traffic), a Shopify store becomes valuable. You own the customer relationship, control your margins, and reduce your dependency on Etsy's platform.

Many successful sellers run both simultaneously, Etsy for discovery and new customer acquisition, Shopify for brand building and repeat customer purchases. This dual approach captures the best of both worlds.
