Thirteen tags. That's all Etsy gives you per listing. It sounds like a lot until you realize each tag is a doorway to a different search query. Waste even one, and you're closing off a potential path to a sale. But use them strategically, and those 13 tags can cover dozens of buyer search variations.

What Etsy Tags Actually Do

Tags tell Etsy's search engine what your listing is about. When a buyer searches for something, Etsy checks whether your tags (and title) match the query. If they do, your listing enters the ranking pool for that search.

Here's what most sellers miss: tags and titles work together but separately. A keyword in your title and the same keyword in a tag don't give you double credit, Etsy treats them as one match. So using identical phrases in both your title and tags is a waste. Your tags should expand your keyword coverage beyond what's in your title.

The 13-Tag Framework

Here's a systematic way to fill all 13 tags for maximum coverage:

  • Tags 1–3: Core product descriptors (what it literally is). Example: 'cat wall art,' 'feline poster print,' 'animal home decor'
  • Tags 4–6: Buyer intent / use case. Example: 'gift for cat lover,' 'living room artwork,' 'housewarming gift idea'
  • Tags 7–9: Style and aesthetic. Example: 'minimalist pet art,' 'modern animal print,' 'black white illustration'
  • Tags 10–11: Room or setting. Example: 'nursery wall decor,' 'bedroom poster art'
  • Tags 12–13: Seasonal or trending. Example: 'christmas cat gift,' 'gallery wall set'

How to Research Tag Ideas

Start with Etsy search autocomplete. Type the beginning of a search term and note what Etsy suggests, those are real searches with real volume. Then look at what tags your successful competitors are using.

Here's a process that takes about 5 minutes per listing:

  1. Type your main keyword into Etsy search and note all autocomplete suggestions
  2. Open the top 5 selling listings for your product type
  3. Check their tags (use browser extensions or look at their page source)
  4. List all unique tag phrases you find across those listings
  5. Select the 13 most relevant ones that aren't already covered by your title

Multi-Word Tags vs. Single-Word Tags

Always use multi-word phrases, never single words. The tag 'cat' matches millions of listings. The tag 'watercolor cat painting' matches far fewer, and the people searching for it are much closer to a buying decision.

Each tag can be up to 20 characters. Use that space. 'Cute cat print' is better than 'cat', and 'cat lover gift idea' is better than 'cat gift' because it's more specific and still fits within the character limit.

Tags That Waste Space

These types of tags aren't helping you and should be replaced:

  • Your shop name or brand name: Buyers aren't searching for your brand (yet)
  • Single generic words: 'Art,' 'Print,' 'Poster' alone are useless
  • Overly specific tags nobody searches for: 'Tuxedo cat sitting on blue pillow' has zero search volume
  • Duplicate phrases from your title: You're not getting extra credit
  • Misspellings (on purpose): Etsy's search handles common misspellings automatically

When to Update Your Tags

Tags aren't set-and-forget. Check your listing analytics every 30 days. If a listing isn't getting search impressions, your tags might not match what buyers are searching for. Try swapping 3–4 tags with new keyword variations and give it another 2 weeks.

Also update tags seasonally. A poster that's tagged 'minimalist winter art' in December should swap that tag for 'spring wall decor refresh' in March. Same product, different discovery pathway.

Let AI Help With Tag Research

Manually researching tags for every listing is tedious, especially when you have dozens or hundreds of products. AI content generators can analyze your artwork and suggest relevant tags based on visual content and marketplace search data, saving you the research grind while still hitting the right keywords.
