Most sellers obsess over getting more traffic. But there is a faster, cheaper way to increase revenue: get more money from the traffic you already have. Cross-selling (suggesting complementary products) and upselling (encouraging buyers to choose a higher-value option) are techniques that major retailers use constantly, and they work just as well for small Etsy shops.
Cross-Selling on Etsy
Cross-selling means suggesting related products that complement what the buyer is already looking at. If someone is viewing a single botanical print, they might also want a matching set. If they are buying a nursery poster, they might need a matching growth chart or name sign.
- Create product sets: Gallery wall bundles, matching collections, themed suites that encourage multi-item purchases
- Use listing descriptions: Mention related products with links: "This print pairs beautifully with our matching [product name], see it here"
- Organize shop sections: Group complementary products together so browsers naturally discover related items
- Offer bundle discounts: Price a set of three at slightly less than three individual purchases to incentivize the larger buy
- Use listing photos: Show the product alongside complementary items in your styled mockups
Upselling on Etsy
Upselling encourages the buyer to choose a more expensive version of what they are already considering. For POD sellers, this often means offering multiple sizes or formats within a single listing.
A poster listing might offer 8x10, 16x20, and 24x36 sizes at increasing price points. A wall art listing could offer paper print, canvas print, and framed options. The buyer is already convinced they want the product, you are simply giving them the option to invest more.
Digital Plus Physical Combos
One powerful cross-selling strategy is offering both digital download and physical print versions of the same artwork. List them as separate products and link between them in the descriptions. Some buyers want the convenience of a digital file; others want the quality of a professionally printed piece. Offering both captures both buyer types and increases your total revenue per design.
The Impact on Your Bottom Line
Increasing your average order value from $15 to $22 does not sound dramatic. But if you make 100 sales per month, that is an extra $700 per month ($8400 per year) with no additional traffic or listings. That is the power of optimization over acquisition. Get more from what you have before chasing more of what you do not.
